The Scharlachberg is mainly characterized by Rotliegend, has a high iron content and sometimes shines almost “scarlet red”. The Rieslings from Scharlachberg show the typical Riesling fruit, and with a vibrant tension and very present minerality, they are real long-distance runners, but also surprisingly accessible even in youth.
The 2016 Große Gewächs sparkles in the glass with golden yellow reflections, presents itself on the nose with intense aromas of ripe peach and fresh peach blossom. Powerful, opulent and punchy on the palate, the lively acidity in combination with the beautiful minerality provides decent drinking flow. Remarkably long finish with hints of dried cranberries and plums. A powerful, versatile Grosses Gewächs with great potential that also harmonizes excellently with dark meat, strongly spiced dishes and Asian cuisine.
The winery of the Princes of Salm-Salm in Wallhausen, with 18 hectares of vineyards in Rheinhessen and on the Nahe, is the oldest family-owned winery in Germany. Wine has been grown here for over 800 years – without interruption, and with Prince Felix and Princess Victoria, the 32nd generation is now at work.
Prince Felix zu Salm-Salm has been responsible for the vineyards and the cellar since 2007; in 2015, his father, Michael Prinz zu Salm-Salm (VDP President 1990-2007), handed over the business to him. Family tradition for 32 generations: Felix and Victoria Prinz and Prinzessin zu Salm-Salm cultivate 130,000 m² of vineyards in the best locations in Germany, among other things. Viticulture has been practiced on the steep slopes of the Nahe and in Rheinhessen for centuries. In addition to VDP membership, the winery is also certified with the FAIR’N GREEN sustainability seal.
